Stowe Valley MATS - Budding Athletes

PE is the way that students at school get active so what does a PE think? So Matt, Spencer and Fin went to Bilton to report on sport and the first thing they did was interview Mr Gleghorn, a PE teacher and an Assistant Head, in order to get a general opinion on sport at Bilton.

When Mr Gleghorn was asked how would he rate the sport at Bilton, he replied, "They have great participation of girls and boys at Bilton and we have an amazing amount of facilities that students can work with which really helps them. We also have a really good intake of GCSE students." Feeling positive, he then said that he "would rate it a 7 and a half out of ten" and that "we always have things to improve on."

Impressed by this, we asked him since he had arrived at Bilton, how have things in the PE department changed. He stated that he "started out as Head of PE" and that "the number of those taking PE GCSE pupils has increased to." He also expressed that as the head of student voice, he "speaks to various students in the school council."

After he had said how they include everyone in PE We wanted to know how Mr Gleghorn helped support disadvantaged students. He commented that Bilton "try to include afterschool activities such as Frisbee and dodge ball to people who prefer less sporty activities" and that he had "specially arranged some late busses. Also, that "some pupils have funded kit if they struggle to afford it." We were very happy with this because it was very what we wanted to hear about Bilton. He was a really nice person and we would love to be taught by him.

After that, we questioned him about the most popular sport. Mr Gleghorn spoke about him the sort he thinks is most useful. He said that "Bilton used to have a swimming pool" which "most people loved" it and that "it would be a life skill for the people who did not know how to swim".

Overall, Mr Gleghorn thought that "it would be really nice to be able to have that opportunity again." It was really nice speaking to Mr Gleghorn and that it was really helpful and interesting because he had lots of knowledge about Bilton.

Recently, Bilton had invested in a new sports hall that had been brought in in 2016 and currently they are building a new tennis court that will be used for netball as well as hockey. There are many outstanding facilities at Bilton ranging from Gyms and Football pitches to basketball courts and dance studios and after speaking to a few students we understand that they enjoy using and having the freedom to use these areas. Bilton have recently opened up their gym to the public after school and also rugby clubs have been able to use the large sports fields out the back.

We had interviewed Kate taking the BTEC course She said "she had had to gain at least a grade B in P.E and you can possibly get in with a Grade C because it is more about developing and gaining deeper understanding of the body and how it works." When taking BTEC, we also learned that it is 100% theory and there a 2 exams. We wished Kate good luck in her studies.

We also were lucky enough to interview Osis who is taking A Level P.E to understand his reasons for taking this course he replied saying he enjoyed using the facilities
