Southam College were represented well in the 'School Games' Handball Tournament. With the squad from year 10 unavailable due to exams, a group made up entirely of year 9 boys and girls set out to try and conquer experienced year 9 & 10 area champion schools.
The sport had to be quickly learned by our year 9's as none of them had never played Handball before; so after a quick rule-briefing they were thrown in at the deep end!
Results were fairly mixed amongst some good performances. In total, we drew three games (2-2, 3-3 and 3-3 - all against Avon Valley School!) and lost three games. In the final drawn encounter with Avon Valley, we unfortunately lost in a penalty shootout meaning that we finished sixth out of eight teams at the games.
Despite not winning a game, Mr Ginger is very proud of the squad for picking the game up so quickly and putting themselves against teams who train and play on a regular basis. There were instances of brilliance; with superb goals scored by Dylan Evans and Charlie Thwaites, great defensive play from Alice Dillon and a 'cat-like' goal-keeping performance from Lee Ryder to name but a few. The rest of the squad all contributed brilliantly and are now all keen to play more Handball to develop their skills further and have a go at the trophy next year!
Well done to the players (Alice Parsons (C), Beau Shearer, Will Cooper, Maisie-Jane Bowmaster, Oscar Fuentes, Ruby Cole, Alice Dillon, Charlie Thwaites, Dylan Evans and Lee Ryder).
Mr Ginger
